1. GLBT community using past to create bright future

The goal of a community center, for James Smith, is to provide an open and accepting atmosphere for any member of a community. For Smith, the fact that he wants a center that supports gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered people is secondary to the fact that Pitt County needs a definite sense of community.

2. Making her mark

Donna Roberson, a faculty member of ECU's College of Nursing, believes that HIV is 100 percent preventable, "So why not prevent it?"

That is why Roberson is currently focusing her research on the prevention of HIV in women in jail.

Roberson decided to focus on women in jail because she says they are a demographic that has not received much attention when it comes to HIV prevention education.

3. Board of Governors approves new ECU mission statement

The Board of Governors approved a new mission statement for ECU on Nov. 13, 2009.

The University of North Carolina Board of Governors required all of its institutions to revise their mission statements in order to reflect the goals of the UNC Tomorrow initiatives.

4. One Card required for Student Health Services

On Dec. 1, the Student Health Center will now be requiring students to present the ECU OneCards in order to be seen by a health professional or to have a prescription picked up or refilled.

Thursday, the National Pan-Hellenic Council, ECU's umbrella organization for the nine largest historically African-American fraternities and sororities in the nation, hosted its first NPHC Fall Social.

Their goals are to bring Thanksgiving to those who otherwise may not have one and to recognize foundations within the community who have made an enormous impact on our area.

With everything from electric cars to biodegradable, non-toxic chemicals for cleaning your home, it seems society has not missed a single detail when it comes to going green. ECU's Student Government Association (SGA) seems to have caught onto the trend as well.

7. AAA Carolinas sees more NC Thanksgiving travelers

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - AAA Carolinas says more people in North Carolina plan to travel this Thanksgiving as families worried about the economy choose to hit the road rather than the skies.

The travel services company said Monday that it expects about 1 million people to travel more than 50 miles from home for the holiday.

9. Women's basketball improves to 4-0 for first time in a decade

The ECU women's basketball team stayed undefeated during the season with two more wins this past weekend.

The Lady Pirates won a tight battle on the road against American (70-65) on Sunday, and beat UNC Wilmington (72-52) in a deciding fashion on Thursday night.

10. ECU swimming teams finish fourth and fifth at Gamecock Invite

After three days of competition at the Gamecock Invitational at the University of South Carolina's Sol Blatt P.E. Center and Carolina Natatorium, the ECU men's swimming and diving team finished in fifth place of seven squads while the Pirate women took fourth of nine.
