1. Where future Rice students come from

Holding Esperanza in the Health Museum was bound to provide an interesting setting for those in attendance. Brown College junior Wharton Wang and Jones College sophomore Grace Ching take a break from dancing to check out the museum exhibits last Saturday, one of the many bodily activities that night.

2. Beer Bike track set for facelift for next year

While Rice's possible merger with the Baylor College of Medicine may have garnered much attention in recent months, the focus of Duncan College and McMurtry College students has centered on a different type of expansion across campus.

The inception of the two new colleges has necessitated an expansion of the Beer Bike track.

3. Pool of prospects expands

With the passing of the Nov. 1 deadline for early decision this year, it has become clear that the number of applicants is once again increasing.

Although regular decision applications are not due until Jan. 2, 2010, Vice President for Enrollment Chris Muñoz estimated that applicant numbers will increase by 21 to 24 percent this year.

4. Rice & BCM: Inside the Merger

When talks of a merger between Rice and the Baylor College of Medicine began last year, discussions were held in private, but one thing was clear: Both institutions verged on a frontier of unknown possibilities. For years, Rice and BCM, intertwined through both proximity and the highly successful Rice/Baylor Medical Scholars Program, have held discussions on a range of topics, with the merger always being considered as a possibility, Rice President David Leebron said.

5. Religious differences foster dinner discussions

For the first time in the university's history, the Rice Interfaith Dialogue Association, in conjunction with the Boniuk Center for the Study and Advancement of Religious Tolerance, hosted dinner talks Thursday at two residential colleges to discuss students' religious differences.

6. School-wide shirt design announced

For an organization that holds its meeting in a room often used as an art gallery, the Student Association does not typically take advantage of the inspiration surrounding itself. Well, no more. The SA recently held a Who Drew? T-shirt design contest, which called upon the student body to design a T-shirt that encompassed Rice's culture.

7. Rice ranks fourth for "best value" in nation

In a repeat of last year's ranking, Rice came in fourth as a "best value" private school on both The Princeton Review and Kiplinger's Personal Finance rankings published earlier this month. The top 100 national schools were ranked. California Institute of Technology, Princeton University and Yale University precede Rice in the rankings.

8. Rice & BCM: Faculty Merger Review Committee

The Faculty Merger Review Committee was formed April 23 due to a resolution passed by the Faculty Senate during a plenary meeting that same day. The committee, comprised of 15 faculty members, was charged with a threefold task: to identify risks and benefits of a merger with Baylor College of Medicine and discern ways to increase opportunities and curtail risks should the merger occur; to consult a wealth of interested parties, including the Board of Trustees, the administration and the Faculty Senate; and to offer advice to the Faculty Senate, the administration and the board.

9. Rice & BCM: Point/Counterpoint

The possible acquisition of the Baylor College of Medicine is one of the biggest decisions Rice has faced in its 97-year history, and dozens of variables are to be taken into consideration before a final verdict is reached. President David Leebron, a high-ranking proponent of the merger, and professor Moshe Vardi, one of its most outspoken opponents, debate the merger's merits.
