1. Raids throughout History

Last year, the History Department at UIC had 32 faculty members. This year, it's 24. Over the last several years the university has been undergoing a generational shift across the board as professors who were hired in the 60s and 70s retire and young faculty members are hired to replace them.

2. Hard times to come

UIC President B. Joseph White sent out an e-mail to the University of Illinois community last week, asking the university to begin preparing for the possibility of a budget rescission.

"A budget rescission differs from a base budget reduction," explains Dr.

3. Institute for the Humanities a boon to researchers

Searching for a unique, intellectual environment that caters to explorers of innovative ideas in teaching and research? Look no further than the Institute for the Humanities. Founded in 1982, it is one of the oldest Institutes in the country, and is located in Stevenson Hall here on UIC's campus.

4. Electoral, financial squabbling in USG

William Rodriguez, Associate Dean of Students, was in attendance at last week's USG meeting to inform the assembly of possible changes to the election process this spring. Some of these recommendations include an earlier election timeline, moving it from April to February, and a campaign spending limit, which would cap the executive candidates and trustee spending at $500 and assembly spending at $150.

5. Students for Justice in Palestine: A real look inside

You have likely heard of the group Students for Justice in Palestine, as they are the ones generally heard screaming about Israeli Apartheid around campus. The Flame recently ran an article about the group that presented it as a clean-cut, moderate, non-prejudiced organization that only wants people to hear about the plight of the poor Arabs in Israel (Students for Justice in Palastine: An inside look (11/2/09).

6. Alternative Spring Break expands at UIC

Since the fall term of 1998, UIC Alternative Spring Break has been sending students committed to community service to places in need throughout the United States. Founded by students, UIC's chapter is still student run, but what's different is the number of students participating and the number of trips made for volunteer opportunities.

7. Overheard at UIC, commented and liked on Facebook

'Overheard at UIC' is growing as one of several UIC facebook groups for students. It is open to all members of the Ill. Chicago network, and members can invite other network members to join.

The premise for the page is for members to post snippets of conversations they hear while walking to class on campus.

8. Flames Struggle in Subway Classic

The UIC women's basketball team fell in their first game of the Subway Classic, 63-49, to Colorado on Friday night.

Defense ruled the first half for both teams, with Colorado (2-0) taking a 21-17 lead into the break. Senior Jessie Miller had four first-half steals and sophomore Shameia Green led all scorers with six points in the first half, to go along with three steals of her own for UIC (0-3).

9. Sports Briefs

UIC women's basketball head coach Lisa Ryckbosch announced today that Emily Kobel (Palos Heights, Ill./Marian Catholic) has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Flames starting in the 2010-2011 season.

"Emily is the product of very successful high school and AAU programs," said Ryckbosch.

10. Unpleasant stay in Mount Pleasant

The UIC men didn't silence any of their critics last week with a 67-48 loss to Central Michigan (2-1) that saw the Flames (1-1) down by as many as 23 points and without a single two point field goal in the opening half of their first Division I outing.

Shoddy shooting and poor rebounding were in abundance for the Flames as they quickly lost sight of the Chippewas.
