Barnard offers many college experiences in one: Barnard students enjoy the intimate setting of a small, selective liberal arts college for women in New York City. They also enjoy all the resources and opportunities of a large university through Barnard's unique affiliation with Columbia University, situated just across the street: this partnership between the two schools gives students a vast selection of additional course offerings and extracurricular activities, NCAA Division I Ivy League athletic competition in 15 sports, and a fully coeducational social life. Barnard students help shape and benefit from the close-knit community among bright, ambitious young women on the beautiful, residential four-acre campus; Barnard's metropolitan location in New York City means that students also have access to thousands of internships and excellent cultural, intellectual, and social resources. Barnard students particularly appreciate the school's superb faculty, more than 60% of whom are women. They receive individualized and responsive advising from leading scholars who serve as dedicated, accessible teachers. The student to teacher ratio of 10 to 1 encourages close interaction with faculty; student-centered seminar classes foster a dynamic, engaging learning environment.

Barnard's campus includes an underground hallway system that connects all buildings. On a cold winter day, students can go from their residence halls to their classrooms to the dining halls to the library to their faculty advisor's office hours, even to the Java City Cafe for a warm latte, using the convenient "tunnels."

Every May and December on the eve of the first final exam, President Judith Shapiro leads faculty, administrators, staff, even the Barnard Board of Trustees, in serving students the much-anticipated Midnight Breakfast. The menu includes immense amounts of scrambled eggs, French toast, pancakes, potatoes, waffles, and muffins, not to mention coffee. Students enjoy the study break and, of course, the sight of their professors in chef's hats, aprons, and gloves dishing out breakfast to 1500 undergraduates. Midnight Breakfast is a cherished tradition at Barnard that nourishes school spirit and campus community. Today, its fans include the many Columbia students who stream across Broadway to join their Barnard friends in a carb-loaded break from the books.
