What Makes Us Unique

Boise State provides unparalleled access to both urban and outdoor activities. Boise State is located along the Boise River, and the Boise River Greenbelt provides easy access to the river and a place for recreational activities such as biking, rollerblading and running. Boise State is also only minutes away from the Boise Foothills, which offer an extensive trail system. It’s also close to Bogus Basin, a ski resort, and a drive away from the world-famous Sun Valley ski resort. Boise State is only a few hours (or less) from some of Idaho’s most famous rivers, offering the perfect whitewater or kayaking trip. The Outdoor Program at the Student Recreation Center offers discounted backcountry trips to students.

Boise has a vibrant downtown, including diverse restaurants and lively entertainment opportunities. Boise is home to Ballet Idaho, the Boise Contemporary Theater, the Idaho Shakespeare Festival, the Boise Art Museum, the Discovery Center, and many more cultural attractions. The Morrison Center at Boise State University brings in touring shows, and students can enjoy concerts by nationally-known musicians at the Taco Bell Arena at Boise State.

Boise State also has incredibly affordable student housing. The campus is home to more than 170 student organizations, offering something for everyone. Organizations such as the Student Programs Board, the Volunteer Services Board and the Cultural Center offer plenty of opportunities for free or low-cost entertainment. The Boise State Student Union has high-speed Internet connections, a bowling alley and a games room. It also has excellent food, including the TableRock Café, Tsunami Sushi and Chicago Connection pizza.

Boise State is a great place to get a well-rounded education and experience everything Boise and the scenic state of Idaho has to offer.

Fun Facts

The field at Boise State’s Bronco Stadium isn’t your average green turf. It’s a brilliant shade of Bronco Blue. The artificial turf was unveiled when Boise State played Humboldt State in 1986. Almost 20 years later, it remains the only non-green surface on which college football games are played. It has gained national attention as the Broncos have climbed the 1-A ranks.

Also, the first commercial airmail service in the United States took place at what is now Boise State in 1926. A plane from Varney Airlines (which later became United Airlines) took off from an airstrip that was located where Bronco Stadium stands today.

Traditions / School Myths

Legend has it that there’s a ghost named Dinah in the Communication Building. The Communication Building once housed the Student Union Building, and one popular story says that Dinah killed herself there after being rejected by a date at the Student Union ballroom. Dina was particularly active in the theater department’s costume shop, which was housed upstairs in the building in the 1970s. In recent years, she has been known to switch on banks of computers after they were turned off. At least one faculty member avoids teaching in Room 226, supposedly the site of the ill-fated dance.
