More than 120 years ago, George Carpenter and several others came to a plot of land, an undeveloped wooded area outside the city of Des Moines. Among the native elms, oaks, and hickories stood one elm tree, remarkable for its size and beauty. Climbing high into the tree, Carpenter eyed the landscape and was captivated. "Here we will build our University!" the future Chancellor announced from atop the great elm. That majestic elm, henceforth, was called the Chancellor’s Elm. Unfortunately, the elm was lost to Dutch elm disease in the late 1990s.

The annual Drake Relays track and field event, which began in 1910, includes the Beautiful Bulldog contest—bringing real bulldogs from several states who compete to be the Relays mascot for the year—and street painting. One street on campus is permanently closed for campus organizations to paint their depiction of the Relays theme. Hundreds of students turn out to paint each year. Another Drake tradition is Hubbelling - "borrowing" a tray from Hubbell cafeteria to use for sledding in the winter.
