The Program of Emphasis is Juniata’s distinctive approach to learning that allows and encourages students to design a program of study that fits their interests. Want to study Mathematics and Theatre Performance? Accounting and Environmental Studies? Biology and Ethics? At Juniata, students have the chance to fuel intellectual passions and develop a unique array of skills that set them apart from others after graduation.
The POE, as well as significant attention to providing numerous opportunities to learn through experience, fuels Juniata’s defining focus on outcomes. That focus yields results unlike those seen at most other places: our graduation rate is very high, over 75 percent, and of those that graduate, 96 percent do so in four years or fewer. Within six months of graduation, more than 95 percent of our graduates secure meaningful employment related to their field of study or are enrolled in graduate school.
We understand our accountability to students, their families, and the society we serve. For that reason, we stand behind the excellent education Juniata provides with a unique guarantee: Juniata guarantees students will graduate in four years or less, or the remaining credits required for graduation are free. Furthermore, we are up front about the facts behind the promises we make on our accountability page (www.juniata.edu/accountability).
Our focus on providing students a high-impact education that sets them apart means we provide a rich and varied array of opportunities to learn by doing. Our students manage to study abroad, participate in research, volunteer in different efforts, and hold down an internship (and often two or three) during their time at Juniata, and still graduate in four years.
Juniata’s sense of community is a defining asset virtually every student notices when she or here first visits and subsequently—and more powerfully—when they enroll. Our students volunteer for organizations and causes that make the world a better place, form clubs (from the Knitting Club to the Mud Junkies (ceramics) to the Skulldiggers (history)) to explore their diverse interests, and form very strong mentoring relationships with faculty and staff. In fact, graduates routinely name men and women on our faculty as friends who persist long after graduation. For a school of our size, we also have a sizable world community, drawing students from more than 30 nations to campus.

Juniata's left-handed scholarship, worth $1,000 to $1,500 a year to studious southpaws, was established by the late Mary Francis Beckley, a former Juniata student, with a bequest of $24,000 in 1979. Nearly 50 Juniata students have taken advantage of the scholarship to date.
Juniata may have had the one of the nation’s first co-ed dorms. All students in the schools early years lived in Founders Hall, and since Juniata enrolled both women and men at the time, the building was thus co-ed.

Each spring, Juniata freshman try to cross through the arch in Cloister (the oldest dorm on campus), while upperclassmen (and rugby teams) stop them. Known as Storming of the Arch, the annual event has happened since the 1940s. No freshman has yet made it through.
Juniata holds Mountain Day each September. Students cancel classes and retreat to Raystown Lake, with faculty and staff, for a cookout and tug-of-war between students and faculty.
"Mountain Day for the Mind" happens each April. Classes are cancelled for a day, and scores of students present creative and scholarly work via research posters, performances, talks, and exhibitions.
Every December, faculty serve students at Madrigal Dinner, for which students camp outside Ellis Hall in advance of ticket sales. Lobsterfest welcomes students back each fall, a huge lobster cookout when student clubs (90+) pitch for new members.
Juniata has a 150+ year tradition of service to one’s community and the world.
