Northwest Missouri State University is located in Maryville, MO, a rural town of 11,000, centrally located between Kansas City, MO, Omaha, NE, and Des Moines , IA. We have approximately 6500 students on our campus, and they hail from over 50 different countries. With over 100 undergraduate majors and 20 graduate programs, our top three most popular departments are Business, Education & Agriculture. The average classroom size is 22 students and all of our classes are taught by Professors, not Graduate Students or Student Teachers. We offer hands-on experience in all majors during the freshmen year. For example, Education majors can teach at the elementary lab school located in the center of campus, or Broadcasting majors can work on our student-run television or radio stations.
We provide all basic textbooks for our students at no additional charge and all students who live on-campus, receive a new Gateway notebook computer, fully loaded with wireless, high-speed internet access - free! We offer low tuition for in-state and out-of-state students, with large scholarships based on ACT scores and class rank and out-of-state status. Under our new American Dream Grant, low-income families will only pay $1500 per year for everything they need at Northwest. Our football team won back-to-back National Championships in 1998 and 1999, with one game having 4 overtimes! Our mascot is the Bearcat; an animal which is considered hard to capture and even harder to hold.

The tradition of the hickory stick dates back to 1930, when Northwest presented the hickory stick to Northeast Missouri State University (now Truman University) with the intent that it would be a traveling sports trophy. Since that time, the winning team has kept the stick each year.
