What Makes Us Unique

Each Ohio Wesleyan student will experience the University in his or her unique way. There is no such thing as an “Ohio Wesleyan mold” to which students must conform. Instead, OWU students find that they are encouraged to be different. Whether it’s working with a professor to design a distinctive major, establishing a new club on campus, or finding innovative ways to help others, students have the freedom to shape their own Ohio Wesleyan experience.

The Ohio Wesleyan experience is about getting involved—but it’s up to the students to decide how they get involved. Every year there is a different blend of active students on campus, which is evident in the more than 100 campus organizations.

Service learning and community service are essential components of the Ohio Wesleyan experience. The visible majority of OWU students are involved in at least one form of community service. From service learning mission trips to mentoring elementary school children in inner-city Columbus to Habitat for Humanity, there is ample opportunity to serve at OWU.

If students cannot find a current service organization they would like to join, they can establish new service projects. Recent programs founded by students include “Latino Outreach,” an English-as-a-second-language tutoring program for the Latino community in Delaware, and an OWU chapter of the India Literacy Project, which raises money and awareness for education in India. Commitment to service does not end at Ohio Wesleyan; there is a high rate of volunteerism among OWU alumni.

The annual Sagan National Colloquium offers students a unique chance to hear a variety of speakers address issues such as the impact of science on society, race and reality, and censorship and power. Previous SNC speakers include President Gerald Ford, author Kurt Vonnegut, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Laurie Garrett, and scientist and television host Bill Nye.

Fun Facts

In 1949, a news-feature picture circulated the U.S. showing Herbert Hoover sleeping through OWU’s commencement program after he spoke.

Some current students can trace their OWU legacies back to the 19 th century, when their ancestors arrived on campus in carriages. These legacy students are referred to as “carriage-trade students.”

In 1890, Ohio Wesleyan played the first intercollegiate football game in Ohio against Ohio State and lost 14-10. In 1928, Ohio Wesleyan played Ohio State and the University of Michigan, and beat them both.

Traditions / School Myths

A popular Ohio Wesleyan myth is that Stuyvesant Hall is haunted, particularly the underground tunnel that connects Stuyvesant and Hayes Halls. A long-standing myth among female students is that if a woman stands upon the Ohio Wesleyan seal in University Hall in front of the large mirror, she will see the man she will someday marry in the mirror. Campus traditions include the fierce rivalry with Denison University and more recently, writing events and personal messages on "The Jaywalk."
