What Makes Us Unique

There are many unique characteristics that make PC different from other institutions. First and foremost is the Dominican tradition that all of the college's teachings are based upon. PC is the only college or university in the United States that was founded and is administered by the Dominican order. There are about fifty Dominican priests, brothers, and sisters living on campus, and Dominicans make up approximately ten percent of the faculty.

The strong liberal arts curriculum offered also sets Providence apart. While many colleges offer a liberal arts curriculum, PC's features the Development of Western Civilization (DWC), a two-year interdisciplinary course that covers all of western history from ancient Rome and ancient Greece up to present-day. DWC is required of all freshmen and sophomores and serves as the foundation of the PC core curriculum.

The community aspect of Providence College plays an important role in our students' lives. With 3,700 undergraduates, PC is a great size: neither too large nor too small. The benefits of a small school are present, such as the 13:1 student to faculty ratio with professors who are truly interested in their students' success. At the same time, PC offers over 100 different clubs and organizations, Division I sports teams, and outstanding on-campus facilities that a student might expect to find at a larger college or university. The variety of academic (50 different majors, internship opportunities, study abroad) and co-curricular options makes each student's experience truly unique.

Fun Facts

* The two highest points in the city of Providence are both on the PC campus: the steeple atop St. Dominic Chapel and the top of McVinney Hall. In fact, both of these buildings are visible in the opening credits of the television show Providence, when the camera sweeps the city.

* ’64 Hall, a meeting and performance space on campus dedicated by the class of 1964, proudly displays the flags of the home country of every student who has attended PC. Each time a student enrolls in the college from a country that was not previously represented, that country’s flag is added to ’64 Hall.

* There are a number of Dalmatians hidden in the stained-glass windows of St. Dominic Chapel.

* Of the twenty-something chandeliers hanging in the study lounge of Aquinas Hall, no two are the same height.

Traditions / School Myths

One popular school tradition at Providence is the annual Junior Ring Weekend (JRW). This weekend-long event brings the entire junior class together each November to receive their class rings and is highly anticipated by students beginning their freshman year!

JRW is held in the middle of November and begins on Friday evening with a "club night" that features dancing and music played by a DJ at a "secret" location. Juniors are bussed from campus to the location of the club at night and definitely enjoy their time together as a class. On Saturday morning, there is a Mass held in St. Dominic Chapel on campus where the class rings are blessed and passed out to the students. Saturday night features a formal dinner and dance - also at an undisclosed location - and students enjoy getting dressed up for this big event each year. Finally, on Sunday morning, the junior class comes together again for a brunch and class video highlighting their years spent so far at PC. JRW is a very special eve
