Whether in the humanities, visual arts, performing arts, or natural and social sciences, Purchase College students are creative, imaginative and in search of the extraordinary. Set on a wooded 500-acre suburban campus only 40 minutes from the heart of New York City, Purchase College features the supportive learning environment that’s typical of a small, private college, one where artists and scholars inspire and stimulate one another.
At Purchase, you could share a class with someone from NYC, someone else from the Midwest or the West Coast, and another student from overseas. About 65 percent of students are enrolled in the humanities, natural and social sciences; the other 35 percent study in one of the professional performing and visual arts programs.
The liberal arts and sciences at Purchase emphasize interdisciplinary learning and thinking, and study in these subjects can open the door to virtually any career. The conservatory and art/design school courses are taught in the master-apprentice tradition.
As a liberal arts and sciences freshman, you may take part in a Freshman Learning Community. There, you share with others in your dorm courses taught by a resident faculty member, who is also available for consultation and informal conversation. The Senior Project, the capstone of a Purchase College education, is often the springboard to a career, medical or law school, graduate school, or the arts.
The faculty are published authors and research scientists-the types of professors you will find at any major university. The difference is they share the College’s commitment to individual attention and achievement.
Faculty in the Conservatories of Music, Dance, Theatre Arts and Film and the School of Art+Design are often also professional musicians, recording artists, painters, sculptors, screenwriters and lighting designers as well.
