What Makes Us Unique

The University of the Arts is unique because it is the country's only comprehensive arts university. It is comprised of the College of Art and Design, the College of Performing Arts, and the College of Media and Communications. Bringing these three disciplines together, in one place, makes for a university charged with creativity and interdisciplinary exchange of ideas. Dance students have the option of taking painting courses and animation students are able to learn about jazz history; in short, students have the option of delving into artistic subjects which may vary from their concentration. The University of the Arts is an environment where students are encouraged to collaborate, cross boundaries, and make connections as artists.

Fun Facts

Hamilton Hall, our main building, is the oldest building on Broad Street. Back in 1824 this site was chosen because it was out in the country, away from the hustle and bustle of downtown Philadelphia. Originally the home for the Pennsylvania Institute for the Deaf, it was acquired by the Philadelphia Museum School of Art (now UArts) in 1893 and has been the center of our campus ever since.

Traditions / School Myths

Every year students from the graduating class gather together in The University's Solmssen Court for "The Big Shot." Student's create signs to hold up, come clad in screen printed t-shirts, and wear costumes as they cram into the Great Hall with all of their fellow students for the traditional class photo. As students hang over the catwalk railings, peek from windows and doorways, and wave from the sea of students, The Big Shot captures the enthusiasm and unity present at UArts.
