What Makes Us Unique

PREMIER: The University of Houston, founded in 1927, is Texas’ premier public metropolitan research and teaching institution. We are home to more than forty research centers and institutes and sponsor more than 300 partnerships with corporate, civic, and governmental entities.

METROPOLITAN: Our 550-acre campus, located a few miles from downtown Houston, contains a mixture of traditional classroom buildings and high-tech laboratories interspersed with fountains, plazas, tree-lined walks, and distinctive sculptures. Our newest buildings include an expanded library and a Science and Engineering Research and Classroom Complex.

LEARNING: We offer 105 bachelor’s, 128 master’s, 50 doctoral, and 3 professional degree programs through the university’s twelve academic colleges. We award approximately 6,200 degrees annually and enroll more than 35,000 students each year. Our students receive a world-class education with real-world experience through the C.T. Bauer College of Business AIM Center for Investment Management. This $5 million learning laboratory allows students to apprentice as portfolio managers investing real money in real time with the approximately $3 million Cougar Fund. The programs in the Cullen College of Engineering continue to rank nationally among the top ten. The college offers accredited undergraduate and graduate degrees in chemical, civil, environmental, electrical, computer, industrial, and mechanical engineering. It also offers specialized programs in telecommunications, materials, biomedical, aerospace, and petroleum engineering.

COMMUNITY: We are the most diverse research institution in the nation with over 126 countries represented by our student body. Located in the fourth-largest city in the United States, we work closely with industry, education, and research leaders to provide meaningful internships, projects, and opportunities. With these close community ties, the University of Houston ensures innovation in curriculum and places the student in the midst of a vibrant, entrepreneurial, and economically diverse environment.

Fun Facts

Phi Slama Jama - Born from the fast break and a furious slam dunking style of play, Texas' tallest fraternity leaped to the top of college basketball charts in 1983. Exciting and entertaining, the University of Houston's "Phi Slama Jama" had the nation's longest winning streak that year at 26 games, defeated second-ranked Louisville in what many describe as one of the greatest NCAA Tournament games ever, and became the first UH team to play in the national championship game. Led by All-Americans Clyde Drexler and Hakeem Olajuwon, the fraternity also featured starters Michael Young, Larry Micheaux and Alvin Franklin.

Frontier Fiesta - This Texas-style festival is part of a long-standing tradition at UH. The major components of Frontier Fiesta include Broadway-style variety shows, carnival booths, cultural and educational performances, living historical exhibits, concerts by nationally known recording artists, a world-class cook-off, and a scholarship competition.
