St. Thomas enrolled a student after he was expelled from another Minnesota Catholic college (and St. Thomas’ rival on the athletic field), St. John’s University. That student would become St. Thomas’ most prominent benefactor: Ignatius O’Shaughnessy ’06, owner in the 1930s of the largest individually owned oil company in the world. Today St. Thomas’ library, main classroom building, physical education building and athletic stadium are now named in O’Shaughnessy’s honor.

Notable tradition: A healthy rivalry with St. John’s University that’s been called "the best of small college athletics." Tommie-Johnnie games have made great memories for generations of students from both schools. Myth: That several of St. Thomas’ older dormitories, which date to the turn of the century, are haunted. The stories resurface nearly every year, usually around Halloween.
